Patricia Sears (the third speaker on the call) has an important story to tell regarding her experience in Newport, Vermont as well. Newport is becoming an inspirational story for community generated change. They are getting a lot of attention at national conferences, and awards, for what is happening there. Beyond the hundreds of millions of dollars in new investment and thousands of new jobs coming (in a town of 5,000, which had double-digit unemployment), to hear citizens there describe the civic "attitude adjustment" that has occurred is really impressive. Trish has led the civic organization which has convened the community, brought in a series of national organizations, and most importantly, catalyzed important partnerships across the region to achieve their vision. Like all communities, they continue to deal with a range of challenges, but their success over the last few years is unquestionable.

Hi, everyone! Here's a conference call I think some of you will definitely want to participate in. A partnership NCDD is involved in, Community Matters, is hosting a call on "Civic Infrastructure: On the Ground" on May 9th at 4pm Eastern.

I'll be introducing the topic, and then we'll be hearing from two people who will share timely on-the-ground stories of how civic capacity and structures are being built in their cities. One of those two featured speakers is Janice Thomson, who's work (cataloguing and launching a community of practice for Chicago D&D folks) I've been featuring on the blog.

I hope you'll join us for this call!

Civic Infrastructure: Building Powerful, Vibrant Communities<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?OrtonFamilyFoundatio/44e2041c0e/9a0384c1a2/b930e47919>

Civic infrastructure consists of the opportunities, activities and arenas—both online and face-to-face—that allow people to connect with each other, solve problems, make decisions and celebrate community. By strengthening civic infrastructure, a community can become a more prosperous, vibrant place to live.

But what does strong civic infrastructure look like on the ground? How do you know how much of it your town has? Or needs? How can you and your town start to build it? What are other communities doing that’s been successful?

Learn how to strengthen civic infrastructure in your area on this month’s free CommunityMatters® conference call, Thursday, May 9th from 4-5pm Eastern.
